Fringe review: ‘Adaptopus’ is amusing and well-acted, but disjointed

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:40:08 GMT

Worth consideringDespite being an overall enjoyable watch, political comedy “Adaptopus” can’t decide what it wants to be. The primary plot focuses on a girlboss-y senator more concerned with elaborate worst-case scenarios than actual policy. Meanwhile, an escaped octopus is loose on the town. The script, while amusing, never successfully manages to integrate the two storylines — which each end up preventing the other from being fully explored. Ultimately, in being unable to set aside absurdist intrusions in favor of substantive political commentary, the show itself falls victim to the very phenomenon it seems to be attempting to critique. That said: The acting is on-point; Michael Salazar and Jonathan Fondell are standouts.Presented by Hercules Theatre Company at Augsburg Mainstage; 7 p.m. Aug. 12Still unsure of what to see? Outfielder DaShawn Keirsey is one of three players recently called up from Double-A Wichita by the Saints, and the first thing that jumps out while watching him is his speed.“He flies,” Saints manager Toby Gardenhire said of the Twins’ fourth-round pick in the 2018 draft. The 26-year-old native of San Diego has had a combined 73 stolen bases for Wichita this season and last, showing no signs of the horrific injury in 2017 that nearly ended his career.Playing in the last game of his sophomore season at the University of Utah, Keirsey suffered a fractured and dislocated hip when he ran into the outfield wall. Crumpled on the ground, he knew right away he was in trouble.“I was trying to push it back in place, which was kind of stupid,” he said. “I wasn’t able to move.”Keirsey underwent surgery within the next few days, and six screws and a plate were inserted into his hip area. He recalls being told by one of his doctors that he might not ever walk“normally” again. But after spending th...

A’s salvage winning homestand against Rangers behind Gelof, Tarnok, Ruiz

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:40:08 GMT

OAKLAND — There was every reason to believe the Athletics would slink out of town having stalled the momentum of their two-game sweep of the Giants that featured enthusiastic packed houses at the Coliseum.Three rookies helped flip the script Wednesday against the A.L. West leading Texas Rangers. Second baseman Zack Gelof hit his sixth home run in 22 games, right-hander Freddy Tarnok got his first big league win and center fielder Esteury Ruiz created a run with his legs in a 2-0 win over the Rangers before a crowd of 6,372.It was only a five-game homestand, but given the A’s hadn’t won a homestand all season, taking three of five was significant in the eyes of manager Mark Kotsay.“It feels good to play against contending teams and be competitive,” Kotsay said. “We’ve done that through this homestand. That shows the incremental progress we’re trying to make and we’ve got some young guys on this club who weren’t here and are ...
