The spotlight is on Ukraine at UN leaders’ gathering, but is there room for other global priorities?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:21:00 GMT

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The war in Ukraine and its visiting president take center stage at the United Nations this week, but developing countries will be vying for the spotlight as well as they push for faster action on poverty and inequality at the first full-on meeting of world leaders since the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted travel three years ago.The annual meeting at the U.N. General Assembly takes place at a polarizing and divisive juncture in history — the most fraught and dangerous since the Cold War, according to many analysts and diplomats. They point to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, which upended already difficult relations among major powers as well as the ongoing impact of the pandemic, high food prices, the worsening climate emergency, escalating conflicts, and the world’s failure to tackle poverty, hunger and gender inequality. For developing countries, the top priority is the U.N.’s two-day summit starting Monday aimed at generating action by world leaders ...

Dr. Qureshi from Loyola Medicine answers questions on new COVID vaccine

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 18:21:00 GMT

Most Americans should get an updated COVID-19 vaccine, health officials said Tuesday.Advisers to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention endorsed the new shots for everyone 6 months and older and the agency's director quickly signed off Tuesday on the panel's recommendation. That means doses should be available this week, some as early as Wednesday. The severity of the COVID-19 pandemic has faded, but there are still thousands of hospitalizations and hundreds of deaths in the U.S. each week. Hospitalizations have been increasing since late summer, though the latest data indicate infections may be starting to level off, particularly in the South.Still, experts worry that immunity from previous vaccinations and infections is fading in many people, and a new shot would save many lives.According to a survey last month that CDC cited, about 42% said they would definitely or probably get the new vaccine. Yet only about 20% of adults got an updated booster when it was offered a ...

With just less than 2 minutes to play, Walker had an open shot at an empty net but sent a leading pass to teammate Rasmus Kumpulainen — and the puck floated untouched into the back boards.“Honestly, I don’t know what I was thinking,” Walker said. “I thought he was going and was trying to be a nice guy, just laying it out, and it kind of went too far. I kinda messed that up.”Coach Brett McLean, who ran the prospects camp and will take the reins for the first time as the Wild’s AHL coach in Iowa this fall, said he’d rather Walker had tried to score there but that was hardly the takeaway from the weekend.Th...
