Israel’s war with Hamas has now entered its seventh day with causalities mounting on both sides of the conflict.Law enforcement agencies in the Los Angeles area are among many stepping up security on Friday after former Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal called for supporters to flood the streets for a “Day of Jihad.”The uprising, Meshaal says, is a response “to the Zionists and their criminal leaders and what they wrought, and to the Americans who came to their aid.” In his speech, Meshaal called for the “Ummah to engage in battle” and for supporters to fight as “jihad is an individual responsibility.”“I think it’s very scary,” said John Paul, a Los Angeles resident. “Terrorism is intended to be scary and I think they’ve succeeded in frightening a lot of people.” UCR students speak out after Palestinian flags appear on campus While there have been no specific credible threats in Southern California, law enforcement including the Santa Monica, Beverly Hills and Los Angeles police departm...Palestinians flee northern Gaza after Israel orders 1 million to evacuate as ground attack looms

JERUSALEM (AP) — Palestinians began a mass exodus from northern Gaza Friday after Israel’s military told some 1 million people to evacuate toward the southern part of the besieged territory, an unprecedented order ahead of an expected ground invasion against the ruling Hamas militant group. The U.N. warned that so many people fleeing en masse — almost half the Gaza population — would be calamitous. Hamas, which staged a shocking and brutal attack on Israel nearly a week ago and has fired thousands of rockets since, dismissed the evacuation order as a ploy and called on people to stay in their homes. The evacuation order, which applies to Gaza City, home to hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, sparked widespread panic among civilians and aid workers already running from Israeli airstrikes and contending with a total siege of Gaza. Israel has cut off all food, water and supplies and caused a territory-wide blackout.“Forget about food, forget about electricity, forget about fuel. Does he have a chance?

OAKLAND — Nearly eight months after being fired, former Police Chief LeRonne Armstrong has clawed his way back onto an unofficial short list of candidates to be the city’s top cop.But this may be as far as he ever gets. Armstrong’s fate is once again in the hands of Mayor Sheng Thao, who fired him in February and has the final say in choosing his replacement. So despite three of the city’s police commissioners earlier this week publicizing the list, which included Armstrong and six other unnamed candidates, it is unlikely to gain any traction with the mayor’s office, especially not when the application deadline doesn’t expire until Friday. This latest, mostly symbolic showing of public support for Armstrong by outgoing chair Tyfahra Milele and two other commissioners further highlights the deep political divides that have emerged in Oakland around the former chief’s firing.Last month, an arbitrator who heard both sides of Armstrong’s app...Cal Bears freshman QB Mendoza ‘wanted to be thrown into the fire’ and he’ll get plenty of heat at No. 16 Utah

Will Saturday afternoon at Utah’s Rice-Eccles Stadium be a rude reality check for the Cal football team?Or can the progress made by the Bears’ offense — which jumped to a new level after Fernando Mendoza’s encouraging debut at quarterback — show some staying power against one of the nation’s best defensive teams?Although the Bears (3-3, 1-2 Pac-12) are 13.5-point underdogs against the 16th-ranked Utes (4-1, 1-1), there is an optimistic buzz surrounding the Cal offense we haven’t seen before during coach Justin Wilcox’s seven-year regime.“I’ve heard Utah is an electric atmosphere,” Mendoza said this week, “so I’m really looking forward to it. These are the moments you live for.”Cal fans hope this isn’t a case of be careful what you wish for. The Utes have won 17 in a row at home and will welcome their 80th consecutive sellout. The Bears lost 35-0 at Utah in their most recent meeting in 2019, and have not won in Salt Lake City since 1963.SALT LAKE CITY, UT – SEPTEMBER 16: A gene...Kaiser Permanente and union workers reach tentative deal after largest health care strike in US history
